Accessibility Products
As the U.S. population gets older, and the life expectancy of the population
continues to grow, homes and home building products will need to meet the
challenges of housing people with disabilities and/or age-related limitations.
The NAHB Research Center tests and certifies plumbing fixtures for compliance
to ICC/ANSI A117.1 – Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities.
This type of certification involves:
-
Auditing the manufacturer's quality assurance process
-
Performing required tests to verify ICC/ANSI A117.1 compliance of the product
-
Auditing the product’s installation instructions to make sure they are clear
for an installer to follow in order for the installed product to be in
compliance with ICC/ANSI A117.1
Certification can make accessible product selection easier for architects,
specifiers, plumbers, builders, remodelers, and even homeowners. Carrying the
NAHB Research Center certification mark on your product signifies to code
officials and inspectors that your product has undergone objective and thorough
third-party evaluation specific to accessibility guidelines.
Plumbing fixtures that are already NAHB Research Center Certified require very
little additional effort or cost to become certified as ICC/ANSI A117.1
compliant. Those that are not otherwise certified by the Research Center must
meet certification requirements for plumbing fixtures (e.g., various ANSI 124
specifications) as well as the requirements of ICC/ANSI 117.1.
